Alas, five hundred years since Europeans circled the globe, we are told anew and for a different reason that “the world is flat”. Cities, countries and regions are in competition with each other to attract people, money, knowledge and know-how in a manner that enhances their quality of life without detracting from their sense of place or unique vibrancy.
